Summary

Ethiopia is covered in many different kinds of grass. Ethiopians were among the first humans to start growing plants for food, between 8000 and 5000 BC. One of those plants is an annual grass, native to Ethiopia, called teff. It has tiny seeds, so small that a handful can sow a large area. When the seeds are harvested, teff is used to make injera, a pancake-like food many people eat at every meal. Another kind of grass, cut at the end of rainy season, is used to make the roofs of traditional houses. In the Omo Valley and other savanna regions, entire houses may be made of grass.
