Summary
Inspired by his erudite paternal uncle, Tewaney Abebje, an eleven-year-old shepherd runs away from home with his friend Belay to escape his destiny and to realize his dream of becoming a Qene teacher. After years of arduous life in the school system, Tewaney finally meets his life-long teacher and friend Seregela Berhan, a magnificent figure and a celebrated Qene philosopher. Their relationship becomes that of love, mutual admiration and trust. Furthermore, Tewaney falls in love with a girl who took to her heels from an abusive marriage to join his school. Alas, their love ends in tragedy. Mine to Win is a novel that depicts the school system and the philosophy of education of the Ethiopian Christian traditional education as well as the Tewahido theology. Mine to Win further explores human conception of free will and destiny as epitomized in the life of Tewaney and the people surrounding him. The book examines the epistemological issue as well again evinced in the life of Tewaney and the people he comes across with.
